We have implemented the Bexley Agreed RE Syllabus across the school, ensuring that Christianity and one other world faith are covered in each year group, so that there is balanced coverage across the school. In Year 6, alongside Christianity, the children cover a multi-faith comparison unit based on Creation Stories, examining the similarities and differences between other world faith beliefs, in order to prepare them for the more comparative style of Secondary RE.
The RE lessons enables the children to engage with the subject more effectively, and provides more time for class discussion. All RE work is completed in the children’s Creative Curriculum Books to ensure consistency in presentation and effort across all subjects. Throughout the last year, writing activities have been developed in RE, providing more opportunities for extended writing across a range of genres, including diary entries, news-paper articles and poems.
We link religious beliefs to the school monthly values, or provide a seperate half-termly curriculum theme such as discussing religious festivals occurring at the time, or those that are of most relevance to the children in their class.
In EYFS, RE lessons are focussed predominantly on celebrations, particularly those that are of most importance to the children in the school. As part of the EYFS RE lessons this year, parents have been invited into school to talk to the children, and to give them first-hand accounts of their own religious festivals.
CRIBs (Cristian Resources in Bexley Schools http://www.cribsonline.org/) provide additional RE lessons in both KS1 and KS2, covering Christianity units from the Bexley Agreed Syllabus. This has also enabled class teachers to develop their own RE subject knowledge and to gain new ideas for resources and activities that can be used in their own RE lessons.
Each year, all year groups attend a Christmas trip to our local church, Welling St. Mary the Virgin too.
Each year group in KS2 covers Christianity in their first unit.
These are the other world faiths covered in the second units:
Year 3: Sikhism
Year 4: Islam
Year 5: Buddhism
Year 6: Creation Stories Comparison Unit
