Intent

At EWPA we believe that Art education is an essential part of our curriculum as it provides numerous benefits to children's development. Art enables children to express their thoughts and feelings visually, develop their creativity and imagination, and improve their fine motor skills. Also, teaching art helps children to develop their visual literacy, enabling them to better interpret and understand images, symbols and other visual forms of communication.  Through Art teaching, we aim to encourage children to develop their own artistic style and identity. By providing opportunities for experimentation and self-expression, children can develop their own unique style and voice in art, and introducing them to classic contemporary artists can inspire them to create art that reflects their own perspectives and experiences.

How Art is taught at EWPA

Across the school year, three units of art are covered; these include drawing, painting, collage printing and sculpture. Each unit allows children to explore a range of skills, media and equipment building up to a final outcome. In addition to this, children learn about art history and the different artistic movements that have influenced and shaped art throughout history. This knowledge can help children understand the cultural significance of art and its role in society. Children are introduced to well known artists, celebrating the diverse contributions of individuals from the past as well as contemporary artists.
