We have been informed by several parents of several issues regarding Roblox, an online gaming platform and app for children. Roblox is an online multiplayer game where children can play and communicate with anyone who is also using the service. There is an online chat feature which allows players to speak to each other and this can pose a risk to children and young people.
We are not endorsing the game, but would advise parents to take the necessary steps to raise awareness of the associated risks that can arise, particular from online chat features.
Roblox has proved popular amongst children as much of the content is user-generated however we understand the content becomes more extreme as the game progresses. With the ability to connect with other players from around the world and purchase add-ons via the game store, the game can quickly pose real safety concerns. On several occasions, the game starts out innocently and then progresses to showing content which might not be suitable for children as the user-generated content can be accesses by children who can "play-out" scenarios which are inappropriate.
Our advice is take an interest in what your children are accessing online and monitor their usage. Talk with them about how to stay safe online including being aware of online strangers asking for personal information and remind them that if they have any concerns that they can talk to a trusted adult.
Access to Roblox while at school is blocked.
