Measles Information

Dear Parents /Carers

Schools have been asked by Public Health England to raise awareness of a small number of cases of measles around London.

Measles is a viral illness spread by coughs and sneezes. Symptoms include fever, sore red eyes and rash.

Children will be infectious for four days before the rash appears and for four days after the rash.

If your child develops a rash please telephone your doctor but phone ahead before taking a child to the surgery.

If any child should have a confirmed case of measles – please advise the school and keep the child home for a week.

Small children, pregnant women and immuno- compromised adults can become very unwell with measles.

Children and adults need to have had two doses of the MMR vaccine to be protected. (Usually given at 12 months and three years of age.)

There is no upper age limit for this vaccination.
